Review

Confusion reigned after the Belgian referee, Henri Burgucht, appeared to book Jimmy Johnstone during the match after the Celtic man had questioned his decision to give a free kick. Burgucht called McNeill over as captain and the game moved on but after the game the referee had said to McNeill to calm the volatile Johnstone who was not booked.
The 11,500 crowd were silent and respectful and there was little atmosphere in the ground.
Celtic were disappointing but infinitely superior to their opponents. Celtic returned to the old form of creating and making chances but failing to put the ball away. The only goal came in 23 minutes when McBride rose superbly to head in a corner by John Hughes.
Only four Celtic players emerged with pass marks – Ronnie Simpson, Tommy Gemmell, Billy McNeill and Bobby Murdoch. They worked to the same Stein plan of guarding against Aarhus for twenty minutes and then cutting loose. The goal came on 23 minutes but the expected continuation failed to arrive though Celtic showed their undoubted superiority. Bent Martin appeared to take a ball when it was over the line and Celtic were denied a penalty when Lennox was sent sprawling.
