Trivia

  • Celtic transferred Jim Kennedy to Morton. Morton were doing reasonably well in the First Division this season and were mid-table. Kennedy was pitched straight into the team on this day and lost 2-0 against Clyde.
  • Scotland beat Italy at Hampden on November 9th with Jock Stein as stand in manager and Bobby Murdoch and John Hughes playing for Scotland. McNeill missed the game with a knee strain.
  • Ian Young was out with an ankle injury and Billy McNeill passed a late fitness test to play in this game. In came Jim Craig for his second first team game of the season at right back. For St Johnstone their new signing from Forres Mechanics, Jimmy Anderson, started at centre forward.
  • Celtic wore black arm bands for the game in memory of Hugh Delaney (more info needed)
  • On the same day Celtic Reserves defeated St Johnstone Reserves 4-2. The Celtic scorers were Chalmers 2, one pen and Divers 2.

Review

Celtic started well and attacked from both wings as well as straight down the middle. The new boy for St Johnstone got very short shrift against Billy McNeill. However. St Johnstone gave as good as they got and this led to an open and exciting game. McBride broke the deadlock with a tap in after a Charlie Gallacher shot was only parried by the St Johnstone keeper. Hughes first goal in the second half was a wonderful solo effort with the big man cutting in from the wing and hitting a great shot from an acute angle. Jimmy Johnstone added a third and Hughes finished it off with another goal seven minutes from time.
