Trivia

  • Celtic delayed naming the team to the last minute. Hughes had picked up a knock in the Cup Winners Cup game against Aarhus and failed to recover in time. He was replaced by Bertie Auld. Jim Craig continued at right back with Ian Young dropping to the Reserves.
  • In the European Cup Winners Cup Celtic were through to the quarter finals after the win over Aarhus but they would not know their opponents until mid December when the draw for the next round would be made. Still in were Magdeburg (East Germany), Atletico Madrid, West Ham, Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund (West Germany), Dynamo Kiev and Honved (Hungary).
  • The Reserves beat Hamilton Reserves 3-0 with a team of Fallon, Young, McCarron, Brogan, Cushley, 'Newman', Connelly, Quinn, Chalmers, Divers, Taylor.

Review

The team started well with attack following attack. Auld opened the scoring heading a Gallacher cross. Jimmy Johnstone scored the second when he received a pass from Clark and beat three defenders before hitting a top corner shot. Gallacher and Lennox had chances to make it three but at half time the score was 2-0.
One way action continued in the second half with Simpson to a greater extent inactive. Gemmell scored from a deflection. Murdoch scored a blistering goal. Tweelve minutes from time Billy McNeill was carried off with what looked like a serious injury after a collision with the Accies goalkeeper. McBride finished the scoring seven minutes from time.
