Trivia

  • A cold snap again hit Scotland with snow falling. The League programme for the 4th December fell immediately foul with all games off. Celtic and Rangers had already been given the weekend off by the SFA because of the World Cup qualifier against Italy in Naples. This game saw Scotland lose 3-0 going out of the 1966 World Cup in England.
  • Also a victim of the weather was a Friendly arranged between an ‘Old Firm’ Select and Dynamo Moscow. This was due to be played at Hampden on the Friday 3rd but was called off with a frozen pitch and rapidly rearranged for Celtic Park at 5pm on the 4th, but again fell victim to the weather. The thaw arrived on the 8th and the ground was again protected with a blanket of hay ready for this game.
  • Back in at right back came Ian Young and with Gallacher restored at inside right, McBride moved back to centre forward and Steve Chalmers missed out.
  • On the same day Hibernian Reserves beat Celtic Reserves 1-0. The Celtic team was Kennedy, Halpin, McCarron, Cattanach, Craig, Brogan, J. Quinn, H. Quinn, Chalmers, Auld, Taylor.

Review

Celtic kept up the challenge at the top of the League with this 2-0 win against Hibernian. In a tight game John Hughes got the opener when he leathered a Jimmy Johnstone corner into the net. Hibs had their chances but failed to take them through a combination of bad luck and poor shooting. McBride made it 2-0 fifteen minutes from time when he fired home a cross from Jimmy Johnstone after the winger had brought the ball forward iwith one of his characteristic jinking runs down the right wing.
