Trivia

  • Ian Young was out again having re-injured the ankle which had kept him out before, in his comeback game against Hibernian. Back in again came Jim Craig who was turning into a very reliable replacement. Also out was Bobby Lennox and back in came Steve Chalmers at inside left. McNeill was fit againand back in training but not chanced in this game. Dunfermiline were also challenging at the top of the table and were the only other team that could break the deadlock of the Glasgow sides.
  • Dunfermline played in unusual cerise coloured jerseys with thin white stripes.
  • Clyde held Rangers 2-2 at Shawfield.
  • The draw for the European Cup Winners Cup quarter finals was made and Celtic were paired with Dynamo Kiev with the first leg at Celtic Park. In their preparation Celtic would receive help from a friendly source. Ex-Celt Bertie Peacock's Coleraine side had been put out by Dynamo Kiev in the first round.

Review

Two brilliant goals by Steve Chalmers settled this for Celtic and with Rangers drawing Celtic were drawing in on the huns at the top of the table. This game was a belter from the off with both sides looking for the win. Hughes, Gallacher and McBride all had chances to put Celtic ahead within the first five minutes. Ronnie Simpson had to be hyper-alert in the Celtic goal as Dunfermiline were not without their own goal chances. Chalmers settled the nerves in the 61st minute when he collected a long ball out from John Cushley, controlled it, turned and hit a solid shot which cannoned in off the post. And five minutes later he took advantage of a defensive blunder to poach his second.
