Trivia

  • Celtic played in change strip of all green.
  • Gallacher, who had taken a leg knock in the game against Rangers was declared fit and the same team that had started against Rangers played here. John Hughes also had been doubtful with a leg knock but played anyway.
  • In Scottish football a move was being considered by Third Lanark to sell their ground and move to East Kilbride. The Thirds had been relegated at the end of the previous season and had gone to part-time status. They were languishing in the depths of Division 2 with money problems at the club. Two schemes to move clubs to East Kilbride had already been tried. Clyde had considered moving from Shawfield two seasons before and there had been a brief scheme to amalgamate Clydebank and the budding east Kilbride team which was also ruled out. Third Lanark's proposed move was immediately opposed with fans setting up an action group with disgruntled shareholders.

Review

Charlie Gallacher scored the only goal in a tough game against Dundee Utd. The Arabs defended well and attacked with purpose on the break. Close man marking in the first half ruled out good delivery from the Celtic wingers and Dundee Utd's quick breaks were generally snuffed out by the Celtic defenders on the 18 yard line. In the second half both Johnstone and Hughes began to find more space and deliver better ball, Johnstone in particular getting the better of his marker and providing some delightful football down the right. On one of his runs he squared the ball to McBride whose shot was parried by the goalkeeper and Gallacher was on hand to sweep the ball home. Thereafter Dundee Utd broke from their defensive set up and despite troubling Simpson with a few shots they were generally too hurried to pull back an equaliser.
Dundee Utd had Millar booked.
