Trivia

  • Patience with Russian delays to the flight plan to allow Celtic to fly directly to Tbilisi for the second leg against Dynamo Kiev finally snapped and Celtic declared the tie off for the 19th January. Having chartered a jet and arranged a route and having been given an initial OK, the Russians declared they would have to go through Moscow, a route which Celtic had been avoiding since the tie was drawn in early December. UEFA countered stating that both sides had to reach agreement before the 25th or the tie would be declared void. The Russian authorities finally relented and allowed the Celtic party to fly directly to Tbilisi without passing through Moscow.
  • Gemmell and McBride both faced fitness tests after picking up knocks in the tie against Dynamo Kiev. They both played and in the end an unchanged side faced Aberdeen.
  • An icy pitch and a cold frosty day.
  • On the same day Celtic Reserves defeated Aberdeen Reserves 2-1 at Celtic Park. The Celtic scorers were Sweeney and J. Quinn. The Celtic team was Fallon, Halpin, McCarron, Henderson, McNeil, Brogan, Connelly, Sweeney, J. Quinn, Auld, 'Newman'.

Review

The run of 24 games without defeat finally came to an end at Pittodrie. The team must have felt that another win was on the cards when Joe McBride put them ahead on six minutes with a header. But Aberdeen fought back and scored twice, first from Ravn when he intercepted a Cushley pass back, and then through Winchester in the first half to go in 2-1 up at the interval. Aberdeen added a third goal in the second half.
There was a degree of trouble in the crowd and a number of supporters were removed from the ground to the pavilion with the police having to wade into the stands.
