Trivia

  • The 2-0 win against Rangers had not been without cost. Many players were carrying knocks, in particular both full backs Gemmell and O'Neill looked like they might not make this game. Bobby Murdoch, Jimmy Johnstone, Joe McBride and Bertie Auld were also suffering from a variety of knocks. Bob Rooney worked his magic wand in the physios room at Celtic Park and all of them declared themselves fit for this game and Celtic pretty much fielded an unchanged team other than the regular inter-leaving of Lennox and Chalmers.
  • Celtic win 9 – 4 on aggregate

Review

A crunching game with two Dunfermiline players going into the book. The Celtic players showed considerable restraint in the face of, in some cases, outright aggression and it was their coolness that saw them win with style and progress to the semis. Dunfermiline had no attack plan. Down the wings they could make no progress and in the centre was Billy McNeill. Their challenge lasted all of 30 minutes and then Celtic got going with McNeill heading a signature goal. Chalmers got the second goal with a swerving and twisting shot that out-foxed the keeper. He picked up a second goal after the interval when he latched onto a goalkeeping error. Fleming picked up a consolation goal for the Pars but they were never in the match after the first half hour.
