Trivia

  • The provisional Friendly against Santos of Brazil that was attempting to be fixtured by Celtic was finally called off. Firstly Santos wanted too much money and too many guarantees and the final nail was when the Brazilian Football Federation refused to give them sanction to travel to Scotland.
  • John Clark was the only uncertainty following the League Cup quarter final against Dunfermiline with a knee knock. But such was the fitness regime at Celtic Park which had fed through into the spirit and phsique of the players that he passed a fitness test with no problems and played. It was clear now that Jock Stein was carefully husbanding his front line, rotating players and using them to their best abilities for given games. Here it was Chalmers turn to drop to the bench.
  • The kick off was delayed for 10 minutes to let the mass of late arriving supporters get in the ground.
  • On the previous night Celtic defeated Dundee 6-1 in a Reserve League match at Celtic Park. The Celtic team was Fallon, Young, McCarron, Henderson, Cushley, Hay, Taggart, Connelly, Quinn, Gallagher, Macari. The Celtic scorers were Connelly 2, Quinn 2, Taggart, Stewart o.g.
  • On the same day Celtic defeated Hamilton Accies 4-0 in a Combined Reserve League match at Barrowfield. The Celtic team was Martin, 'Newman', Gorman, Halpin, Craig, Brogan, Goodwin, Gray, Clarke, Taylor, 'Junior'. The Celtic scorers were Clarke 2, Taylor, Brogan.

Review

First League game that Celtic use the sub (Willie O'Neill had subbed Jimmy Johnstone in the League Cup game against St Mirren earlier in the season). Chalmers came on for McBride in the second half. Joe had picked up a knock during the first goal and it was decided at half time to replace him with Chalmers.
Dundee opened the scoring – the first time that Celtic had gone behind at the start of the game this season – with Penman netting just before the half hour. Penman had caused flutters in the Celtic defense from the off. That lead didn't last too long however. Celtic should have had a penalty when Johnstone was pulled down well inside the box but the referee, despite entreaties from Gemmell and Johnstone gave a free kick outside the area. McNeill headed on the Bertie Auld free kick and Lennox running in on goal trundled the ball home. .
In the second half with Chalmers at centre forward, Celtic were awarded a penalty when Houston handled. With McBride, the usual penalty taker off, Hughes took the kick. Penman saved his shot but could do nothing to stop Chalmers' follow up shot.
Billy McNeill was booked in this game for dissent and Stuart for persistent fouling. Dundee also used their sub, Kinnimouth coming on for Wilson in the second half.

A nigh on perfect month for Celtic and with three games in the League they were equal on points with Hibs at the top of the table but ahead on goal average.
