Trivia

  • This was a Monday night floodlit game. The game had been due to be played on the Saturday but because of committments of players to the international against Wales it was postponed to the Monday. Furthermore the game had been an away game but both sides decided to switch the home and away ties.
  • On the Saturday, Scotland played Wales in an international in Cardiff drawing 1-1. Celtic were represented by Gemmell, Clark, Johnstone and McBride. The game was all the more poignant because of the Aberfan disaster (see below).
  • Tommy Gemmell and Joe Mcbride both picked up injuries against Wales on the Saturday. Gemmell recovered after treatment but McBride was out

Outside of football the Aberfan disaster happened in South Wales when an old coal bing slid into and engulfed a school and buildings killing 116 children and 28 adults.

Review

Celtic got off to a flier when Bobby Lennox when two Ayr Utd mistakes allowed him to side foot into the net. Ayr pulled themselves together and kept it tight for the rest of the half with Celtic misfiring in front of goal. Bertie Black puleed an equaliser back for Ayr but just before the whistle for half time Hughes pulled a goal back to go in 2-1 up at half time. Celtic dominated the second half scoring another three goals.
