Trivia

  • Jinky was feeling the wrath of the boss and Stein continued with dropping the outside right. The whole team had come in for a pillorying from Jock Stein through the pages of the Celtic View for not following the tactics set out and playing to orders. The team here was effectively the same as the one for the Monday night Glasgow Cup Final with only Ian Young coming onto the bench instead of Jim Brogan.
  • Gemmell and Clark, Murdoch, McBride and Lennox were all in the Scotland team to meet Ireland at Hampden the following Wednesday.
  • John Hughes who had injured his knee in the game against Rangers in the League Cup Final was back in light training.
  • A greasy ball and a waterlogged pitch.
  • Celtic Reserves were at home to Hearts Reserves on the same day. Celtic won 3-1 with the Celtic scorers being Macari, Taylor and Quinn. The Celtic team was Fallon, Craig, Brogan, Henderson, McCarron, Cattanach, Taggart, Connelly, Quinn, Taylor, Macari.

Review

A goal in the third minute saw Celtic off to a rip roaring start to this game. Bertie Auld centred and the goalkeeper rose high for the ball and dropped it neatly for McBride to slot home. Joe added another from the penalty spot when Markie handled an Auld shot just before half time. Bertie Auld added the third in the second half after following up a shot from Lennox which was deflected off Markie on the goal line and out to McBride who passed to Bertie to shoot home.

With Rangers drawing against St Johnstone at Muirton Park, Celtic moved further ahead at the top of the table with three points now separating them.
