Trivia

  • Glasgow police began investigations into the selling of an "obscene" song book outside Celtic Park. The labelling came from Celtic chairman Bob Kelly who called the police in after saying he was unaware of any publication being on sale other than the official match programme. The song book contained 11 Irish Republican and anti-royalist songs and was sold on the night of the Nantes game for 6d a pop.
  • Willie Wallace was named in the squad for the game and duly made his Celtic debut after his £30,000 move from Hearts. McBride was fit again and recovered from his knee injury as was long-term absentee John Hughes but neither were risked. Chalie Gallacher dropped out.
  • Dixie Deans was ordered off for Motherwell and John Clark was booked along with Jim Cairney.
  • On the same day Celtic defeated Motherwell 1-0 in a Reserve League match at Fir Park. The Celtic team was Fallon, Craig, McCarron, Henderson, Young, Brogan, Macari, Connelly, Taylor, Gallacher, Hughes. The Celtic scorer was Gallacher. George Connelly had recently played for the Scotland U21 team.

Review

Wispy had a fairly quiet debut unsurprisingly given his new arrival. It was Stevie Chalmers, who everyone thought that Wallace had been bought to replace who picked up the honours, with a hatrick, two goals coming in the first half. Celtic started flat out as ever with Bertie Auld having two good attempts on goal and Chalmer4s as usual in and about the defenders. The opener came when a Bertie Auld shot was parried to Chalmers who hooked the ball home. In 41 minutes they were 2-0 up. Wallace passed to Lennox whose shot hit the post and Chalmers slipped the rebound home.
The second half continued with all out Celtic attack. John Clark was booked and Dixie Deans ordered off after a serious foul on Jimmy Johnstone which required the outside right having some attention on the side line. Bobby Murdoch hit a 30 yard shot to make it 3-0 (time is wrong in most stats books). Chalmers duly completed his hatrick and from the restart Motherwell went up the park and pulled a second goal back.
