Trivia

  • The Nee'erday Glasgow Derby at Ibrox on 3rd January was called off because of a frozen pitch. The referee Syme inspected the pitch at 10:00am and decided it was too dangerous to play on. The game versus Clyde on the 2nd had also been called off with a frozen pitch. Failed attempts were made to play this on the 4th.
  • Celtic accepted an invitation to send a team of 16 and 17 year olds to a tournament in France. Teams could include up to three 18 year olds. The tournament was sponsored by the Iris Football Club from near Lille in the north of France. The tornament would be staged between May 13-15th with twelve clubs from 8 countries taking part. Each game would be 20 minutes each way.
  • Game went ahead after an 8.45 pitch inspection for frost on the day of the match. When the ground thawed after the cold snap around Hogmanay it had been immediately protected with the usual layer of hay. It was removed the day before this game. Only three other games went ahead in Division 1 and all the Division 2 games were off.
  • In came Jim Craig at right back with Gemmell switching to the left (it was Tommy's 98th consecutive game for Celtic). Also back in was Jimmy Johnstone on the right wing with Charlie Gallacher also called up at inside left. This meant Bertie Auld dropping to the subs bench and John Hughes dropped, who clearly had not recovered his fiull fitness to stake his claim for an outright starting place in the side.
  • Donald Campbell was killed attempting to break the water speed record on Coniston Water when his craft Bluebird somersaulted, broke up and sank.

Review

Celtic started off 1967 with an emphatic win at Celtic Park. The pitch was playable but tricky in places and Celtic in the rubber soled footwear played remarkably good football for the conditions. Murdoch's shot hit Wilson on it's way to goal and registered as an own goal. A minute later he set Wallace up who slammed the ball into the net. Johstone, from a Gallacher free kick, and Gallacher himself from a Wallace cross added further goals in the first half to go in 4-0 at half time.
In the second half a defensive slip saw Dundee pull one back and Wallace added another just before the fianl whistle.
