Trivia

  • The joint SFA and Football League inquiry into Third Lanark announced their findings stating that "….any future failing in responsibility by the club would be met with serious consequences for the future of the club."
  • Joe McBride was slated to play for the Reserves in the Second XI Cup tie against Hearts (see below). Jock Stein said, "…and that should kill once and for all the stupid rumour that Joe is finished as a player. The rumour is completely untrue. We are going to prove that when we replay our Second XI Cup tie against Hearts. Joe is completely fit now as our supporters will see on Wednesday night." McBride was still way out in front in the Division 1 marksman with 33 goals this season. The next highest was Mitchell of Dundee Utd with 19 goals. John Cushley who had also been out for months was also due to return in the game.
  • A number of players were out or recovering from knocks. As well as McBride and Cushley mentioned above, Ian Young had been quite severely injured in the first Reserve game against Hearts. Willie Wallace had also taken a knock against St Johnstone.
  • With a heavy pitch at Easter Rd likely McBride was not included in the squad but Hughes was. He had traditionally revelled in heavy muddy conditions and he made the game with Bobby Lennox dropping out.
  • On the Wednesday night Celtic Reserves played Hearts in a replayed Second XI Cup tie. The team was from Fallon, Halpin, Brogan, O'Neill, Henderson, McCarron, Cattanach, Macari, McBride, Quinn, Taylor, Gallacher, Hughes. Only four of these had yet to see first team action. Hearts Reserves were playing two games that Wednesday night as they also had to play Hibs in the Reserve League. The Cup tie was won 3-2 by Celtic.
  • On the same day Celtic Reserves defeated Hibs Reserves 3-1 at Easter Road. The Celtic scorers were Macari, Taylor and Quinn.

Review

16 hours of torrential rain had turned the pitch into a quagmire with standing water in areas.
Willie Wallace scored a brilliant goal when he beat two men and cracked the ball past the keeper to open the score for Celtic. He took a pass from Clark, beat two men and hit a ripper into the top of the net. In the 38th minute Johnstone sent in a corner which was headed on by Auld and Chalmers beat the keeper to the ball to head home.
