Trivia

  • This game was arranged to assist Celtic before playing Zagreb's fellow Yugoslav's Vojvodina in the European Cup quarter finals in a few weeks time.
  • Much had been made of Stein's strategic work prior to the game and as a deep thinker about how the game was played and the future of the game Jocvk had carefully studied schemes and tactics of many european sides. This was a chance to try out a few theories.
  • The players reported 4 hours before kick off for a special practice involving a warm up and rehearsal of Jock Stein's tactical plans and team orders for the game.
  • The game had been in doubt because of the fixture pile up caused by the game weather cancellations at the start of January. It had been due to take place on the 8th but was brought forward by one day .
  • Both sides had agreed to up to three substitutes during the game.
  • The Zagreb goalkeeper Zlato Skoric obviously impressed Jock Stein. In March 1968 Stein tried toi sign him for Celtic and the Yugoslavian was keen to come but was tied up with military service at that time.

Review

Jock Stein fielded the most experimental side he had ever picked in this friendly game.

He sent out his team in a 3-4-3 formation with 3 centre backs – Cattenach, McNeill and Clark and had Gemmell and Hughes as wide midfielders with three fast runners up front in Chalmers, Wallace and Lennox. Murdoch and Auld were central midfielders.
Some players wore unusual numbers – McNeill 3, Hughes 5, Murdoch 6, Auld 7, Gemmell 8 and Wallace 10.

Despite the experiment Celtic played well and had Chalmers and Lennox not missed sitters then they would have won. Jimmy Johnstone was a second half substitute for Bobby Lennox.
