Trivia

  • Wallace replaces Murdoch again at right half. Jimmy Johnstone was missing with flu and John Hughes came in on the right wing.
  • With four games remaining Celtic remain two points ahead of Rangers with a game in hand.
  • In the Reserve League on the same day Celtic were at home to Motherwell and beat them 4-2. The Celtic scorers were Quinn, Brogan, Cattanach pen and Cushley.
  • Foinavon wins the Grand National……at 100/1. Celtic fans argue that Bobby Lennox would have won the race.
  • Given Ronnie Simpson's performance in this gasme and the fact that he had been in top form for Celtic all season, it was no surprise when on the Moinday following the game he was selected as Scotland goalkeeper to face England at Wembley, winning his first full cap for Scotland at the age of 36 – the oldest player to win a cap so far. Also selected were Gemmell, Johnstone and Lennox with Chalmers a travelling reserve

Review

Eleven months previously Celtic had emerged victorious at Fir Park to win the league championship. Today they took a step towards another title.
Motherwell put up a stiff fight in the first half. With the semi final looming against Dukla approaching Celtic appeared hesitant. In the early stages Simpson had to make fine saves from Deans and Campbell.
In the second half Celtic grew stronger and they took the lead when Hughes sent in a free kick and Auld cut a ball across the area for Wallace to volley home a glorious, powerful shot.
Auld was brought down in the area and Gemmell made his usual job of the spot kick.

Celtic still had the upper hand as the end of the season approached.
