Review

A tough game with some hard tackling. Not only did Rangers lose Provan but by the end Johnson was limping with a twisted ankle and Henderson required stitches in a head wound from a clash with Gemmell.
The main incident in the first half occurred early when Provan went down after a collision with Bertie Auld. He was taken to hospital where a leg break was confirmed. Rangers reorganised their team with Greig dropping back, Johnston coming in on the wing and Persson roving. This appeared to free up Rangers into a more attacking formation and they had good chances in the first half. Celtic too had their chances but it was still even at half time.
In the second half there appeared little danger when Persson picked up the ball in the middle of the park but he beat a number of tackles before beating Simpson with a shot from an acute angle. Celtic went on the hunt for an equaliser with Lennox hitting the post and having a shot cleared off the line.
