Review

Despite winning 2-0 and accumulating an aggregate of 8-2 the team looked far from settled given the number of changes to the side. Not surprisingly Joe McBride looked less than sharp and gone were the razor reflexes that had made him such a prolific scorer the previous season. Ayr Utd also upped their game in the face of a stuttering Celtic attack. McBride's missed penalty (he hit the post) in the 41st minute saw the teams go in at half time level.
Lou Macari made his debut subbing Bertie Auld in the second half. It was Jim Brogan playing at left half who scored the first goal and brought a level of stability to Celtic's play, with a left foot shot from 25 yards. Willie Wallace added a second just before the final whistle. Billy McNeill was booked during the game along with Monan of Ayr Utd.
