Trivia

  • Over the weekend prior to the game both Celtic and Rangers received invitations to play exhibition matches in South Africa and Rhodesia. Rhodesia at this time was in limbo having made a Unilateral Declaration of Independence, and South Africa was facing political and economic sanctions from the Labour government over it's policy of apartheid. Celtic turned down the invitation and were instead made an offer of a three week tour to Kenya and Uganda.
  • Both the SFA and Celtic were waiting to see the referee's report from the Montevideo game in which four Celts had been sent off. Until the report was received nobody could make any decision on the fate of the players and the club.
  • There was team concern for the game at Celtic with both Johnstone and Lennox suffering from colds or 'flu. The team news was delayed till before kick off. Johnstone recovered to take his place but Bobby Lennox was out with Steve Chalmers comning in as a direct replacement and David Cattanach getting the bench spot. In goal for Dunfermiline was ex-Celt Bent Martin.
  • Celtic played in a change strip of green jerseys, white shorts and green socks.
  • Roy Barry was sent off.

Review

The game finished fairtly dramatically with Roy Barry being sent off seven minutes from time after a tussle with Bertie Auld which left the Celtic man requiring treatment from trainer Neil Mochan. Five minutes later Dunfermiline won a penalty
Billy McNeill got the ball roilling with one of his trademark headers from a Bertie Auld free kick before Chalmers, who had a great game, kicked in with two goals, one in either half. Gardner got one for Dunfermiline at the end of the first half to make it 2-1 to the Celts at half time.
Chalmers second goal set up by Auld and McBride set the Bhoys running again. It stung Dunfermiline into action too and Simpson was pressed in the Celtic goal.
