Trivia

  • Jimmy Quinn went to Clyde on a 3 month loan.
  • Hearts appointed Jock Wallace as their new manager.
  • In a surprise move back in came 38 year old Ronnie Simpson in goal. Jock Stein explained it as not so much dropping Fallon but giving Ronnie a run-out given the pressure of fixtures in the coming weeks. Back in too was Jimmy Johnstone with Chalmers dropping to the bench. This was the debut game for Aberdeen's new centre half, Danish international Henning Boel.
  • Celtic were drawn against Partick Thistle away in the first round of the Scottish Cup. This game was watched by newly appointed Hearts manager (and Berwick Rangers goalkeeper) Jock Wallace. Hearts would face Aberdeen in the first round of the Cup.

Review

For the second week running Celtic got off to a cracking start with John Hughes scoring after three minutes. They never really looked back after that opener and Willie Wallace added a second on 27 minutes. It was Wallace's header that was touched on by Boel on the goal line for Celtic's third goal. Aberdeen pulled on back before the end when Celtic took their foot off the gas, but this was first and foremost a quite overwhelming display of attacking football and teamwork.
