Trivia

  • Celtic returned from the 0-0 draw in Milan and were due to face Dundee away on the 22nd. The snow and cold continued in Scotland and the game was postponed with the ground unfit to play.
  • This game too, on the Monday night might very well have been called off. A slight thaw set in on the Sunday and with no frost on Sunday night, the pitch was playable but very muddy and heavily sanded.
  • Both John Clark and Jim Craig were ruled out with leg injuries. This saw Davie Hay getting his second full first team game. Jimmy Johnstone was not going to play because of an ear infection but when hy heard that both |Clark and Craig were out he put himself forward to play.
  • Gemmell missed a penalty.
  • Celtic played in change strip of green shirts and white shorts.

Review

The Bhoys were pretty much on top from the off and never looked like losing the game.
Chalmers opened the scoring when he headed home a parried Lennox shot. There was no further scoring in the first half.
In the second John Hughes also scored from a parried shot this time from Billy McNeill, and Hughes was there to knock home the parry. Bobby Murdoch finished it off with a powerful shot afterwards Chalmers had headed the ball to him. Just before the final whistle Tommy Gemmelll missed a penalty awarded when John Hughes was impeded in the box.
Tommy Callaghan subbed Jimmy Johnstone who was suffering from an ear infection, after the Hughes goal.
