Trivia

  • During the week, Celtic were drawn against Fiorentina in the quarter finals of the European Cup. The other ties were Standard Liege v Leeds Utd, Galatasaray v Legia Warsaw and Forwaerts East Berlin v Feyenoord.
  • The squad spent two days during the week at Seamills training and relaxing as there was no midweek game. All the squad bar Steve Chalmers were fit but John Clark was ruled out during the week with a thigh strain.
  • The kick off was delayed to allow the large crowd time to get in.
  • Rooney and Aird of St Johnstone were both ex-Celtic.
  • Immediately after the game Jock Stein and Sean Fallon headed off to Italy to watch Fiorentina play Roma but missed the first half because of plane delays.

Review

After a fraught opening half hour Celtic kicked themselves into gear and Willie Wallace scored a brace of goals. Tommy Gemmell added to that with a 30 yarder and after the interval and Harry Hood finished off the scoring for Celtic shortly afterwards. In reply ex-Celt Kenny Aird scored for St Johnstone.

This was a game where Bertie Auld was a real playmaker for Celtic.
