Trivia

  • Jimmy Johnstone, John Hughes and Bobby Murdoch all came out of the bruising encounter with Hibs showing wear. However all three recovered and were fit for the game.
  • This was built up as the revenge game for the 1968 game when Dunfermiline knocked Celtic out of the Cup at the first round.
  • On the eve of the game Tommy Gemmell renewed his call for a transfer. This had all followed his sending off in a Scotland international against West Germany and then being dropped for the next Celtic game, the League Cup Final, when he returned to Scotland.
  • Stein refused to name the team before the game in an element of surprise, but it came as little surprise when an unchanged side came out onto the park even down to Jim Craig being named as sub.
  • Dunfermline manager George Farm brings replay tickets to Celtic Park so confident was he in holding Celtic to a draw !
  • On the same day in the Reserve League Celtic were away to Dundee and defeated them 4-0. The scorers were Connelly, Callaghan, Quinn and Davidson.

Review

A Harry Hood goal just before time saw Celtic through in a tough encounter.
For Dunfermiline, Edwards suffered a leg injury after seven minutes and struggled on to half time when he was subbed by Thomson. Craig also subbed the injured Bertie Auld at half time with Daview Hay moving into midfield. The Bhoys were on top for over 60 minutes but could not find the net. Then, when Thomson was off the field getting a cut stitched and Dunfermiline were reduced to 10 men, they went ahead when Gillespie took advantage of a mix up in defense by Celtic. This spurred Celtic on and though it took a further 20 minutes the equaliser came from JHohn Hughes who accepted a Gemmell cross, turned and shot home to level the scores. Not content Celtic pushed for the winner to avoid a tricky return to East End Park and a replay. A clear penalty was turned down but in the last minute Harry Hood rose to a Bobby Murdoch free kick and headed home.
A nail biter!
