Trivia

  • Celtic had defeated Dunfermiline in the first round of the Scottish Cup the previous week with a last minute goal. That game was described as a 'revenge' match so there must have been a degree of edge about this game in the League.
  • Jock Stein was said to be unhappy about the team's performance against Dunfermiline in the Cup and had vowed to shake up the forward line. Bobby Lennox was fit again and came in at inside left. Davie Hay was moved up front and Jim Craig started at right back. Bertie Auld was out injured and Jimmy Johnstone was rested. In came Lou Macari.

Review

With changes to both sides who had played out a nail biter the previous week in the Scottish Cup the game was in a number of ways quite different to the previous meeting. Dunfermiline came to play 11-behind-the-ball and look for a breakaway goal.
Jim Brogan had a goal chalked off for offside early. The first half was pretty much one-way traffic with Evan Williams having very little to do but Celtic unable to put the ball in the net. That changed just before half time when John Hughes hit a scorcher which came back off the bar and there was Willie Wallace to head home.
Immediately on the restart Dunfermiline could have levelled it but dallied and Celtic broke upfield. From a corner Macari got the ball home after a goalmouth razzle in the Dunfermiline area. That should have been it – but again a mix-up in defense saw Gillespie steal in and peg one back for the Pars. That brought new fire into the match till Bobby Lennox got the final goal.
