Trivia

  • Both Rangers and Celtic players gathered at the SFA headquarters at Park Gardens on the Monday to hear the results of the SFA inquiry into the events of the Celtic – Rangers Cup game. The outcome basically, though both sets of officials and the SFA kept a tight lip on what was said, was that both sets of players should keep the head in their encounters.
  • This game had been planned for the Monday night but was put off till the Tuesday.
  • In came Lou Macari and Bertie Auld at the inside forward positions with Tommy Callaghan at right half and Bobby Murdoch on the bench

Review

A fifteen minute spell in the second half saw Celtic good for four goals after a first half in which they had the upper hand but could not score. The opening shot came from an own goal when Danny Ferguson put a Jimmy Johnstone fast-and-low cross into his own net. Two minutes later and from a similar position Bertie Auld picked up the cross and scored a second. Just six minutes later and from a corner, with all eyes focussed on Billy McNeill, it was Lou Macari instead that headed home. Bobby Lennox got the fourth soon after with a cracking piece of work and a shot.
