Trivia

  • The announcement was made that if Celtic managed through to the European Cup semi finals then the home leg would be played at Hampden. This was in part due to work that was about to start on the new East End enclosure at Celtic Park. This would limit the available attendance area at home. The work would continue for four months. Turnstiles at the Janefield Street end of the ground would remain closed for the rest of the season.
  • Celtic prepared for the game as usual with training, swimming etc at Seamills. Dundee meanwhile prepared at Largs with the Dundee manager John Prentice quoted as saying that some day someone must beat Celtic.
  • John Hughes was still out injured from the Fiorentina game with knee and leg injuries. Young Lou Macari is a shock pick in the forward line and scores. Bobby Murdoch came back in with Tommy Callaghan moving back up front and Bertie Auld dropping to the bench. Jim Craig and Harry Hood had also been included in the squad for the game.
  • For Dundee their captain Steve Murray failed a late fitness test and was replaced by Jim Steele.
  • Celtic qualify for their fifth Scottish Cup Final in six years under Jock Stein.
  • In the Reserve League on the same day Celtic drew 1-1 with Morton at Celtic Park before heading off to watch the semi at Hampden. The Celtic team was Fallon, McGrain, Gorman, Dalglish, Connelly, Clark, Gallacher, Quinn, White, Davidson, Wilson Sub Cattanach. The Celtic scorer was Quinn and the Morton scorer was Jordan. The only one in the Celtic side that either had not or would not make a Celtic first team debut was Ward White. It is also one of the few games that Charlie Gallacher proved his presence still at Celtic.

Review1970 SCSF ticket

In a thrilling semi-final at Hampden Dundee put up a strong challenge to Celtic with Jim Donaldson having a great game in goal.

Donaldson had been a rock for Dundee until 82 minutes when he dropped a high ball and allowed Lennox to pounce and fire home the winner. Macari had scored the opener when Bobby Murdoch headed on a Jimmy Johnstone corner. This opener was cancelled out by Gordon Wallace soon after.

Stein was relieved to avoid a replay with a heavy schedule approaching and Auld was left on the bench as a precaution before the game with Fiorentina in midweek.
Young Macari merited his place with a fine display and a goal.

The other semi-final at Muirton Park in Perth between Kilmarnock and Aberdeen proved to be a tetchy affair with Aberdeen winning 1-0 with over 14 arrests within the ground.
