Trivia

  • Following their thrilling tie at Dens Park in the League Cup Quarter Final first leg, it was back to League business and the first Glasgow Derby of the season – discounting the overwhelming win in the Glasgow Cup final.
  • Gemmell was still out with an ankle injury. The plaster was off but he was far from ready to play. Macari had also picked up a knock in the Dens Park game. With Lou Macari out of the front line back in came Bobby Lennox.
  • Jim Brogan missed a second minute penalty after he offered to take it after Harry Hood felt nervous.
  • The Reserves played their game at Ibrox. Celtic fielded Fallon, Craig, Quinn, McCluskey, Davidson, Cattanach, Wilson, White, Chalmers, Dalglish, Callaghan. They were 2-0 behind at half time. They pulled a goal back in the second half but it finished 2-1 to Rangers Reserves.

Review

Murdoch scored one of the best goals in his career in the second half. The ball was squared across the edge of the area and Johnstone cleverly let the ball run across him on to the on rushing Murdoch who hit the ball at full pelt with such force the ball almost tore the net out.

Hughes had scored with a stooping header in the first half and Brogan had the luxury of a missed penalty. However the best performance came from the 19 years old right back Danny McGrain, in his first Old Firm game, who mastered the dangerous Rangers winger Willie Johnston.

This was another fine win over Rangers for Jock Stein which showed that Celtic were still Scotland's dominant team by a distance.

The contrast between the sides was startling. Celtic, full of composure, passing and movement and Rangers with their less effective bustling, harrying and running.
