Trivia

  • Ex Celt John Cushley, who had left the club in 1967 to sign for West Ham, returned to Scotland signing for Dunfermiline.
  • Tommy Gemmell was back in training and approaching fitness. His injury in the opening League game against Morton had allowed the promotion of Danny McGrain to the senior side.
  • Bobby Murdoch had been considered doubtful for this game having picked up a knock in the Hibs away game on the weekend. After a fitness test however he played. The only change from the side that had beaten Rangers and Kokkola and lost to Hibs was Bobby Lennox dropping out for a fit-again Lou Macari.
  • Celtic win 7-3 on aggregate.
  • The draw for the semis saw Celtic matched against Dumbarton who had pulled off a quarter final win against Partick Thistle with ex-Celt Charlie Gallacher using all his veteran skills, and Rangers pitted against Cowdenbeath.

Review

Celtic's performance was described as majestic as they tore Dundee apart. The goals started when Donaldson dropped the ball at the feet of Macari who promptly dispatched it behind him. They went three up before the interval. Dundee pulled a goal back in the second half and missed a good chance to pull it back to 3-2 but sub Paul Wilson added a fourth and Macari finished with a magnificent fifth.

Pick of the goals was when McGrain and Johnstone combined on the right with Hood scoring a bullet header from McGrain's cross.
