Trivia

  • Bobby Lennox was out recovering from an ankle injury as too was Willie Wallace (heel). Harry Hood was on compassionate leave due to the death of his mother.
  • Jock Stein refused to answer any questions on the future of Jimmy Johnstone following his dropping from the last home game against St Mirren. Jinky was included in the squad of 13 named for the game.
  • With only a point between them it's estimated that next weeks Celtic v Aberdeen match will attract 70,000 fans.
  • Tommy Gemmell travelied to Blackburn to play for a British International XI in a Benefit for Ronnie Clayton and then to Lisbon to play for a Rest of the World XI team for Benfica captain Mario Coluna's testimonial . Jimmy Johnstone had also been slated to play in both games but Celtic refused him permission to travel after the shenanigans over the St Mirren game.
  • Bobby Seith was announced as Hearts new manager. Dave Ewing was announced as new coach of Hibernian. Ex-Celt and coach of Morton Eric Smith quit Cappielow to take a position in football in Greece (Evening Times, 2/12/70. This was probably Cyprus rather than Greece).

Review

Celtic narrowly won at Tannadice.
After Billy McNeill scored an unfortunate own goal when he sliced a cross past Fallon, Celtic fought back through the first half but it took until the 58th minute of the second half till Vic Davidson put them level.
United played 4-3-3 and their extra midfielder gave them an advantage.
Only when Stein switched Johnstone and Hughes in the second half did Celtic begin to play. Davidson equalised and United defender Jim Markland scored an unfortunate own goal when he turned the ball past his own goalie after a fine run by Johnstone.
