Trivia

  • This was a Challenge match and used by Celtic to tone up first team players who had been playing with the Reserves. A Tuesday night game with a 7:30pm kick off at Somerset Park.
  • John Doyle in the Ayr number 7 shirt and another future Celt, Joe Fillipi was at right back. Goalkeeper Tom Lally was earning rave reviews for recent performances. David Hay and George Connelly were absent with the Scotland U23 side.
  • The inquiry into the deaths on Stairway 13 on the 2nd January came to a close. The jury were instructed to say nothing on fault or negligence but what had come out during the inquiry was the clear implication that Rangers had done nothing about this exit from the ground even after three prior incidents in 1961, '67 and '69.

Review

Lally and Davidson receive good reviews and Bobby Lennox grabs two opportunistic goals.
