Trivia

  • Celtic had been due to meet Ayr Utd at home at Hampden on Saturday 24th April. Celtic Park was closed because of complete refurbishment of the Stand. After continuous heavy rain the game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Hampden. With Celtic's game off, Aberdeen were beaten by Falkirk. This meant Celtic needed 3 points from their last three games to take the title.
  • Celtic Reserves had won the Reserve League Championship.
  • St. Mirren were desperately in need of points and needed a win to avoid relegation. All the Celtic players reralised that they were also playing to be in contention for a place in the Scottish Cup Final against Rangers.
  • Jock Stein decided on an unchanged team from the one that had drawn with Aberdeen.
  • With this result St Mirren were relegated to the Second Division. Their chairman immediately resigned.
  • Celtic announce they would donate £10,000 to Queens Park to assist with the necessary funds for upkeep of Hampden Park.

Review

Despite going down St Mirren gave a fine performance in their own fight for survival.
A fast end-to-end game.

"We didn't like doing it. We don't like making any club suffer but we had to. It was them or us.",
"They played well sure but if they had played as well all season, they wouldn't be where they are today."
