Trivia

  • The game was played at Celtic Park but there was no access to the Main Stand as construction work was still being finished. All access was by the west turnstiles only. Supporters were asked to arrive early.
  • The first game in the new Drybrough Cup competition – a completely sponsored competition under the auspices of the SFL. Celtic had initially been reluctant to play this tournament but the SFL insisted that all clubs undertake their programme obligations and this forced the issue.
  • The push for youth was on. Out went Tommy Gemmell, Billy McNeill, Bobby Murdoch, Willie Wallace and Jimmy Johnstone. Furthermore Bobby Lennox was out with a leg injury. In came the Quality Street Gang of Davidson, Dalglish, Connelly and Macari. Jim Brogan was captain. There was a two minute silence before kick off in memory of Charlie Tully.
  • Dalglish has now scored fourteen goals in his last three appearances.
  • Celtic had been invited to play Santos on New York on 1 August but could not fulfill the fixture due to playing this game against Dumbarton. The SFL were reluctant to give their permission for the game and when the American sponsors wanted Celtic to play a second time a day later in Toronto, Celtic withdrew.
  • Tom Lally, Celtic's Reserve goalkeeper went on tour to Ireland with Morton and played for them against Glentoran and Ards. Morton were at that time without a first team goalkeeper.

The workers at Upper Clyde Shipbuilders began their lock-down of the yards and told the liquidators to remove themselves from the yards. Gates were manned around the clock by shop stewards who controlled people and material entering and exiting the yards. Nothing could get in or out without their say so.

Review

Charlie Tully died suddenly in his sleep on the 27th of July. Celtic were still in Ireland for their tour and the team attend the funeral despite the troubles in Belfast.
The funeral was on July 29th in Belfast with Jock Stein and Billy McNeill as pall bearers. Huge crowds attended and Johnny Bonnar tells Stein : 'You know Jock, Charlie would have loved this.' May he rest in peace.

Kenny Dalglish finally arrives with a four goal salvo and would not look back. Dalglish impresses not only with his goals but in the cool manner in which he takes them. Stein plays Connelly and Hay at centre back. Charlie Gallagher is given a huge reception by the Parkhead crowd and opens the scoring with a fine shot in 8 minutes.
