Trivia

  • Morton were in a bit of a state ast the start of the season. Their Danish goalkeeper Sorensen had been drafted in at the last moment before the opening game of the season by an urgent telegram to Denmark. Sorensen had returned home saying that he no longer wished to play in Scotland but came back to help out. In their pre-season Friendlies Celtic had loaned Reserve keeper Tom Lally to Morton.
  • Ex-Celt Bobby Collins had left Morton for Australia. Morton had signed Lisbon Lion John Clark during the closed season but he was injured. They also signed ex-Celt Frank Brogan who had been released from Ipswich.
  • Ex Celt Frank Brogan hoped to face brother Jim but Jim was injured recovering from a badly cut eyebrow and did not play.
  • Jock Stein replaced Jim Craig with Danny McGrain rather than bring back Tommy Gemmell. Craig was suffering from a throat infection. Harry Hood and Jim Brogan were both still unfit.
  • Celtic signed 19 year old Ray Franchetti from Baillieston Juniors.

50,000 UCS demonstrators marched through the streets of Glasgow in the biggest demonstration in Scotland since the Second World War.

Review

Celtic win with a simple goal when McNeill heads on a Johnstone corner to Lennox who hooked the ball in from close range.
Morton man-marked tightly and on a tight ground the match barely got out of fizzle level.Kenny Dalglish up front and Danny McGrain and George Connelly won the plaudits on the Celtic side. For Morton their 17 year-old centre half George Anderson won a lot of praise.
