Trivia

  • Jim Craig came out of the previous game with Dundee Utd requiring 5 stitches in a leg wound. However he had recovered enough to play. Jim Brogan and George Connelly who had so far played every first team game were both out. Brogan was out with a leg strain and this gave Jimmy Quinn a chance at left back. Also carrying a leg strain was Davie Hay. DConnelly was out after picking up a back strain in training.
  • Game lucky to be played on a hard frosty pitch with a light covering of snow after sleet, rain and snow hit Scotland. Snow fell throughout the game.
  • George Gibson should have been playing for Falkirk in midfield but the club had just fined him £50 and suspended him for two weeks for what was described as 'a serious breach of club discipline'.
  • On the same day Celtic lost 5-1 to Falkirk in a Reserve League match at Brockville. The Celtic team was Williams, Gemmell, McGrain, Murdoch, Watt, McCluskey, McLaughlin, White, Hancock, Newman, O'Hara Sub J. Davidson. The Celtic scorer was McLaughlin.
  • Ex-Celt Tommy Docherty became Scotland manager after doing the job on an interim basis.
  • Steve Hancock and Brian McLaughlin from the youths were included in the Scotland youth side to face England youths at Firhill. In a 1-1 draw played in atrocious conditions Steve Hancock got the equaliser for Scotland.

Review

Stein tries Jimmy Quinn as an experimental left back and he proves a success in this position. His speed on the overlap was exceptional and led to Stein taking him off the transfer list.
Kenny Dalglish opened the scoring with a great solo goal. Billy Mcneill headed a second after the interval from a Tommy Callaghan corner
