Trivia

  • Sean Fallon took over running of affairs again as Jock Stein went on holiday. The Big Man had been hospitalised over Christmas and into January when he was admitted to the coronary unit of Glasgow Infirmary. It was a clear sign that he ought to be easing off and must have been a major worry for him.
  • Tommy Callaghan was out with a groin injury. Fallon named a squad of those that played against Motherwell plus Brian McLaughlin with an unchanged side taking the field and Mclaughlin named as sub.
  • A Wednesday night game. St Johnstone were under the new managership of Jackie Stewart after Jock Wallace moved on to manage the Scotland international team. They had yet to give Stewart a win in 6 games.

Report

Whilst Rangers and Hibs fought it out in the replay of the Scottish Cup (the buns won 2-1), Celtic got back to narrowing the gap at the top of the League.
Celtic fans chant 'easy, easy' at the end but Saints put up stiff resistance until late on. All the front line missed sitters in the first half and at half time Celtic were up only by the Lennox goal having been wasteful with their shooting. The Buzzbomb's goal came from a Deans pass.
The second half continued that line – with Celtic having much of the play but profligate in front of goal. It was only after Brian McLaughlin subbed Jinky after 65 minutes that the Celtic machine started to click and goals followed from Davie Hay, Lennox and Dalglish.

Hunter impresses again in goals and Scotland youth player Brian McLaughlin has a fine game as sub and created Dalglish's goal.

At the end of February the table looked like this.
