Trivia

  • Further moves were made by the Glasgow authorities to get football grounds licensed following trouble at a number of games including the last Glasgow Derby at the weekend.
  • Celtic, through Celtic View, asked the supporters to pick a new away strip. The all-green strip had never been popular and the suits decided to give the fans a voice.
  • Kenny Dalglish was out having taken another knock to the same ankle that had kept him out prior to the Rangers game.
  • In the Reserve League Cup on the previous night Celtic defeated Falkirk 4-1 at Brockville. The Celtic team was Barclay, J. Davidson, McCluskey, McNamara, McDonald, Murdoch, Wilson, Callaghan, Ritchie, Lynch, Quinn Subs O'Hara and McCool. The Celtic scorers were Quinn 2, McNamara and O'Hara. 'Barclay' in goal was Graham Barclay just signed from Blantyre Vics.
  • Johan Cruyff moved from Ajax to Barcelona for £900,000 – the player himself contributing half the fee – but he would not be allowed to play for the first team till December.

Review

Falkirk shock the Celtic support by taking the lead. Although Celtic fight back they are not on top form but Ally Donaldson in the Falkirk goal is easily man of the match. Celtic are strangely shot-shy almost preferring to walk the ball into the net. That, the bar, the post and Donaldson in goal for Falkirk contrived to give Celtic a less-than-easy night.
