Trivia

  • The big news was the transfer of Bobby Murdoch, who had been freed by Celtic on the Saturday of the Rangers game, to Middlesbrough, managed by Jack Charlton, where he would tie up with a young Graham Souness.
  • Celtic's first Euro tie against Finnish opposition since playing KPV Kokkola in 1970.
  • Celtic took an 18 man pool for the game leaving on the Monday morning. The part included Any Ritchie and Roddie MacDonald as well as Evan Williams and Dixie Deans. Dalglish remained behind with an injury picked up in the Rangers game, along with Brian McLaughlin and Bobby Lennox.
  • George Connelly has to take his penalty twice.
  • Small band of Celtic fans travel to Finland and are shocked at the prices. A plate of soup is £1 !
  • Stein laments Brian McLaughlin's injury as this game would have been great experience for him.
  • Celtic's next league game against Morton on 22 September has been postponed to allow Scotland to prepare for the forthcoming crunch world cup qualifier against Czechoslovakia. Dalglish, McGrain, Hunter, Connelly and Hay were included in the Scotland squad
  • The only scheduled game before then would be the Reserves game against Queen's Park Strollers at Lesser Hampden in the Second XI Cup on the 22nd. There was a Benefit match on the Monday of a joint Rangers and Celtic team against a Glasgow Junior Select in aid of Louis Boyle (retiring manager of Ashfield) at Saracen Park. Quinn, McCluskey, Davidson, Deans, Wilson, McNamara and Wilson all had a part in this. Tommy Burns played for the Glasgow Junior Select (plying his trade whilst farmed out to Maryhill)

Review

Celtic scored with their first real attack when Johnstone found McGrain on the overlap and his cross was headed in off the bar by Callaghan.
Incredibly Turku equalised when Hunter missed a Toivanen cross and Harritu's header was punched off the line by McGrain. Andalmin made a perfect job from the spot.

Celtic went up a gear and Hood restored the lead after Johnstone had beaten three players on a mazy run.

After half time Celtic's pass and move tactics tired the part time Finns and in 60 minutes Johnstone scored with an amazing curving shot. After this goal it was noticeable that the Finns replaced their keeper.

In 78 minutes Connelly scored with a retaken penalty he had already converted. Late on Deans scored from a low Hay cross and Callaghan rounded things off with number six.
