Trivia

  • Bobby Lennox was back! Deans dropped to the bench. Both Deans and Lennox had played for the Reserves on Tuesday night
  • McGrain, Hay and Dalglish played for Scotland in midweek away to Czechkoslovakia. David Hay captained the side in a 1-0 defeat. However Scotland had already qualified for the World Cup Finals. England were held to a 1-1 draw by Poland and failed to qualify.
  • Evan Williams was being looked at as a replacement for MacRae at Motherwell. MacRae headed south to Manchester City for £100,000 and Motherwell tabled a bid for Williams. Celtic turned the bid down when Williams decided to stay at Celtic Park.
  • Celtic missed out on Ian Phillip of Crystal Palace when he transferred back to his former club Dundee for £50,000. Rumours were also spreading that both George Connelly and Kenny Dalglish were unhappy at Celtic and the back-stage problems were building up.
  • Ex-Celt Mike Jackson joined Albion Rovers as coach/trainer. Mike had been training and coaching junior side Benburb.
  • McNeill is carried off injured after a bad collision with Hunter.
  • In the Reserve League on the same day Celtic defeated Bertie Auld's Hibs side 2-1 at Easter Road. The Celtic team was Williams, J. Davidson, Quinn, McNamara, McDonald, Welsh, Wilson, V. Davidson, O'Hara, Lynch, McCool Subs Ritchie and McAleese (?). The Celtic scorers were Wilson and Vic Davidson.

Review

Celtic and Hibs served up the game of the season so far on a wet and windy day. There was praise from all sides on the quality of play of both teams.

Hibs scored first and were denied a good penalty claim when Brogan fouled Duncan in the box.

With McNeill off Celtic put Hay to centre half to replace him. McCluskey took his place and he scored a fine equaliser after Murray and Dalglish had set him up. Celtic pressed hard for the winner but Hibs held out. The talents of Connelly and Stanton were outstanding in the difficult conditions.
