Trivia

  • Celtic travelled down to Seamill to prepare for this replay. MacDonald was out having had a recurrence of the thigh muscle strain in the first game. Edvaldsson stepped in and Pat McCluskey was included to add more bite to the midfield and allowing Kenny Dalglish free rein up front. Wilson, who had been ineffective in the first game was dropped to the bench.
  • Ayr Utd had been forced by the SFA to play a League game against Hearts on the Tuesday night. so this was their second game in two days.
  • Celtic signed Alfie Conn on the Tuesday from Tottenham Hotspur for £65,000 and he watched the game from the stand as the Celtic fans chant his name. Conn's signing was seen as a bit of a coup for Jock Stein as he had been linked to a return to Ibrox.
  • On the following night Celtic defeated Hearts 4-1 in a Reserve League match at Celtic Park. The Celtic team was Baines, Gourlay, T. McGrain, Casey, McGrane, Black, Gibson, Mackie, Henderson, Wilson, Burns Subs Godzik and Temperley. The Celtic scorers were Wilson, Henderson, Godzik and Casey.

Review

Celtic edge Ayr in a competitive cup tie. Ex Ayr star John Doyle is the Celtic hero with a great display and scoring the vital second goal.
The game was level at half time and the fitness of Celtic's full time squad weighed out against part timers Ayr Utd. Celtic had gone ahead from the penalty spot after Dalglish was upended in the box but Ayr had equalised through Masterton.
An early goal in the second half put Celtic ahead and a defensive mistake later saw Aitken shoot home.
Ayr were worthy opponments and fought all the way.
