Trivia

  • A Wednesday night game having already played (and been beaten by) them in the League on the previous Saturday. With Stanton, Conn and Lynch all out Jock Stein delayed the team selection till right before the game. Also out now was Roy Aitken.
  • Ronnie Glavin missed a penalty.

Review

Roy Aitken was injured and Joe Craig dropped as Jock Stein changed the team pattern with the swift pairing of Wilson and Lennox up front.

In the first 30 minutes Celtic missed a procession of chances with keeper Muir leading a charmed life.
In the second half Paul Wilson was sent sprawling in the area as he was about to shoot and from the penalty spot the normally reliable Ronnie Glavin smashed the ball against the face of the bar.
Motherwell were dangerous on the break throughout the game.

Three players were booked ; Glavin for Celtic, and McVie and McLaren for Motherwell.

Celtic now faced a difficult journey for the 2nd leg in three days time.
