Trivia

  • Celtic win 3-2 on aggregate. They will play St Mirren in the quarter finals.
  • News emerged in the papers about Pat Stanton's knee injury – which is more than had emerged from the club. Stanton had twisted the knee in the first game of the season. He had had cartilage surgery but further complications had set in with Stanton going down with jaundice. Some said that he would be unlikely to play again but Stanton vowed to be back.
  • On the Monday after the Dundee Utd game Johannes Edvaldsson handed in a written transfer request. Shuggie had been dropped to the bench for the game.
  • Edvaldsson found himself dropped completely. Tom McAdam was ineligible for the game, with Roy Kay coming in at right back allowing Aitken to go forward to replace Glavin who also moved forward. Peter Mackie and Alfie Conn were on the bench with both getting on during the game, Conn returning from injury and Mackie for his first team debut.
  • The new Safety at Sports Grounds Act was enforced and would see Celtic Park restricted to a maximum attendance of 56,500 without changes in crush barriers and exits. The ground record attendance was 92,000 set in January 1 1918 for a Celtic – Rangers game (this is as reported by the Evening Times but the figure is disputed in various publications. The highest Attendance given elsewhere is 83,500 for the Celtic-Rangers game of January 1, 1938).

Review

The Celtic fans eventually turn on their team at the end. At the final whistle there are jeers and boos from the crowd after an embarrassingly bad display. Only an own goal saves Celtic's blushes and Stirling go close several times to forcing extra time. These are worrying times for Jock Stein.

Highlights of the game were shown on the BBC that night which only adds to the embarrassment of it all.
