Trivia

  • Danny McGrain and Tommy Burns were both ruled out with injuries and Stanton was still out. Tom McAdam and Joe Filippi were both cup tied. However Ronnie Glavin was fit enough to make the bench and with Alfie Conn having come through the Friendly against Hamilton Accies there were options. Jock Stein withheld naming the team till right before the game.
  • This was Ian McWilliam's last full game for Celtic. He made a further substitute appearance for Joe Craig in the second leg a week later and then was lost to the midst of time. At 6ft 5" McWilliam was one of the tallest players ever to turn out for Celtic.
  • Celtic lost 2-0 in the first round of the Daily Express 5 a sides at Wembley. Ipswich beat Coventry in the final.

Review

In the early stages of the match when the home side were attacking like terriers, Peter Latchford was immense in the Celtic goal. His handling of the slippery ball was faultless on a night of constant wind and heavy rain.

Frank Munro found the unmarked Alfie Conn with a free kick from near the half way line. The winger made straight for the bye-line before crossing low into the goal mouth and Joe Craig stuck the ball into the net for Celtic's first.

Joe Craig made the running for the second goal just five minutes before the interval. He made a long penetrating run through the middle before passing the ball to Johnny Doyle and was in position to head the ball into the net from Doyle's cross.

Four minutes after the interval an Andy Lynch free kick was knocked across goal by Johnny Doyle and Edvaldsson scored from close in.

Celtic lost a crazy goal to St Mirren but the result was never in doubt and in fact an Alfie Conn 'goal' was mysteriously disallowed.
