Trivia

  • Figures are announced that despite Celtic's dreadful form this season they still have the highest average home attendance in Scotland.
  • Two defeats in a row – both games had been expected to produce a win. Something was wrong! It was as if the club had never recovered from the selling of Dalglish.
  • Ayr Utd made a bid to take Bobby Lennox down the coast to Somerset Park.
  • Alfie Conn was out injured and Joe Craig dropped.

Review

A black cloud hangs over Parkhead at the start of 1978. Motherwell again defend in depth and despite Celtic pressure they cannot break through. Celtic desperately miss their injured stars, McGrain, Stanton, Conn and Doyle. The large Celtic crowd seem to accept the inevitable and there is little noise at the final whistle.

A game full of niggling petty fouls.
