Review

This was a calamitous result and was Celtic's first defeat in the Scottish cup to a lower league side for 31 years as first division Kilmarnock earned the right to play Rangers in the next round.

Celtic played Joe Fillipi in an unusual midfield position at number 4 but Killie started well and Celtic were fortunate to go in level at half time. They started the second half brightly with Jim Stewart saving well from McAdam and McCluskey, however Roy Aitken was harshly sent off for a second booking early in the second half and Celtic were reduced to 10 men. Kilmarnock, with ex Rangers striker Colin Stein on loan as striker, had the best player afield in young winger, Davie Provan.

Derrick McDicken was the Killie hero when his shot went in off a post in 83 minutes although Celtic rallied and it was McDicken who saved Killie in the final minute when he blocked Edvaldsson's goal bound shot on the line.

Celtic now had only the League Cup final to look forward to in 12 days time at Hampden as their only chance of silverware for the season and a chance for European games next season.

As the huge devastated Celtic support cascaded back home over the Fenwick moors it was described akin to Napoleon's retreat from Moscow.
