Trivia

  • It's announced that next weeks LCF against Rangers at Hampden will have a 1pm kick off.
  • This game was not to be underestimated. Sitting towards the bottom of the league, a win against 2nd-from-bottom Ayr Utd was a must.
  • Attendance is down to 15,000 after the previous Monday night's shock defeat to Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup. The support had been pretty firm up to that point with attendances for home games up above the 22,000 mark. The all-round disappointment at the Kilmarnock result was palpable at Celtic Park.
  • At least there were signs that the injury nightmare might have turned the corner. Ronnie Glavin was fit to play and Doyle, Pat Stanton, Alfie Conn and Andy Lynch all played for the Reserves.
  • On the night before this game in the Reserve League Celtic lost 4-1 to Ayr Utd at Somerset Park – notable for the first game on return for Pat Stanton and the first appearance of Brian Coyne. The Celtic team was Baines, Kay, Lynch, Coyne, McWilliams, Casey, Doyle, Conn, Lennox, Mackie, Godzik. Subs Stanton and Ward. The Celtic scorer was Lennox. Pat Stanton played the last 25 minutes. It was his first competitive football for nearly seven months.

Review

Celtic blitzed Ayr with three first half goals and only fine goalkeeping by Sproat kept the score respectable .Burns and Glavin were Celtic's most creative players and this performance put the team in fine spirit before next week's LCF against Rangers at Hampden.

Had it not been for Sproat then Celtic would have had a hatful and he denied Glavin a hat trick with two great saves in particular.
