- Celtic were injury free on the Monday following the Aberdeen game but Lynch picked up a leg strain in the week and the team was rejigged with Burns dropping back to left back and George McCluskey coming in.
- Hibs were on a run and had gone from second bottom to third top after picking up 13 points in 7 games.
- Roy Aitken is fielded in the unusual number 3 shorts and is Celtic's captain on the night.
- On the following night Celtic defeated Motherwell 3-1 in a Reserve League match at Celtic Park. The Celtic team was Baines, Mackie, Kay, Coyne, McWilliams, Munro, Wilson, Ward, Craig, Conroy, Conn. Subs Temperley and Clifford. The Celtic scores were Wilson, Conn and Munro.
- Hibs were the first Scottish side to feature sponsorship on their shirt – sportswear firm Bukta – against Celtic. Due to the ban on advertising on televised matches, Hibs had to wear this shirt without the "Bukta" logo for televised matches. Explains why when Celtic played them earlier in the season – October 1st 1977 – they were sponsorless.
Review
Celtic and Hibs are fighting it out for the last UEFA cup place in the league. George McCluskey is fast becoming a hero with the Celtic fans and he scores twice, the second a great finish after Aitken and McAdam had created the opportunity.
The team were close to throwing this one away despite a good hard battle. A goalless first half saw both teams come out more determined in the second. Tommy Burns gave away a penalty with a rash tackle which put Hiubs in front. Back came Celtic and McCluskey scored after good work from Doyle and McAdam.
He capped that off with a second nott long after. Hibs fans went home aggrieved believing they had a decent goal chalked off later and that they should have been awarded a second penalty.
