Trivia

1980 SCSF Celtic v Hibs

  • Scottish Cup Semi-final
  • Celtic headed for Seamills on the Thursday prior to the game to recoup and take stock after two losses in the League.
  • Doyle, who missed the last game with a leg knock, and Provan who had been subbed after a head clash were both fit and started.
  • Hibs had no one wearing number 9 or 10 but fileded Lambie with number 14 and Hutchison with number 15.
  • Davie Provan was given the man of the match award by sponsors, Younger’s, which was a cheque for £150.
  • The legendary George Best cannot inspire a mediocre Hibs team at Hampden.
  • Rangers beat Aberdeen 1-0 at Parkhead to set up Old Firm final.
  • On the Monday following this game Celtic defeated Aberdeen 5-0 at Celtic Park in a Reserve League Cup Quarter Final, second leg. This made the score 5-3 to Celtic on aggregate. The Celtic team was Bonner, McStay, Reid, Weir, Duffy, Casey, Sullivan, Davidson, Nicholas, McCluskey, Halpin. Subs Crainie and Douglas. The Celtic scorers were Nicholas 2, Halpin, McCluskey and Davidson.

Review

Provan is named as the sponsors’ man of the match with a great display of wing play.

The team always looked in command against a poor Hibs side.

The sprightly Lennox gave Celtic a half time lead after a surging Provan run down the right and after Provan had scored the second when he latched onto a short back pass, Hibs capitulated.

Doyle added a third from a McGarvey pass. MacLeod added the fourth with a great shot and McAdam added the fifth with a headed goal.

George Best still had fine touches from midfield but could not inspire the mediocrity around him.
