A large crowd turned out on a blustery March day to see if Aberdeen could keep their title hopes alive or if Celtic could storm further ahead in the race for the championship.

Celtic started brightly but Aberdeen took the lead against the run of play when Harrow, their recent signing from Luton, scored on a swift break with the Celtic defence posted missing.

Aberdeen continued to frustrate Celtic although Provan hit a post before half time. Aberdeen looked as if they were missing the influence and subtle touches of the injured pair of Gordon Strachan and John McMaster in midfield.

In the second half Celtic turned up the pressure with the game taking on a cup tie feeling, and George McCluskey was particularly impressive when he replaced Nicholas. The heavy conditions were sapping the players' strength and Celtic were awarded a penalty in 68 minutes after a foul by Watson on Murdo MacLeod. MacLeod himself took the penalty but tried placing it and Leighton was able to save easily.

Mark McGhee was still a danger on the break and Bonner saved well before McGhee claimed for a penalty after a challenge from McAdam.

Celtic gave their all in the closing stages and the equaliser came in 88 minutes after a sparkling run and cross from Provan that was volleyed home by McCluskey. With the Celtic fans in a fervour their team attacked again and McCluskey thought he had claimed the winner after great work from Frank McGarvey but he was controversially given offside although TV pictures were to show that he was marginally on.
