Review

Celtic were convincing winners in the late summer sunshine at Pittodrie. The Celtic supporters' association had called for a boycott of this game by Celtic fans becaused Aberdeen had reduced Celtic's ticket allocation but there was little evidence of any boycott as a huge travelling support packed into the Paddock end of Pittodrie.

Aberdeen had started well and were given a penalty when referee Brian McGinaly deemed that Tom McAdam had impeded Walker McCall. It was a soft penalty but when Gordon Strachan fired home the kick, a Celtic fan ran from the Paddock end to attempt to assault Strachan before being hauled away by players off both teams and the police.

Celtic soon clicked into gear and Tommy Burns equalised with a precise header from 10 yards out from a perfect Davie Provan cross from the right wing. Provan was on top form and Aberdeen struggled to contain his darting runs and dangerous crosses.

Celtic went ahed in 26 minutes when a long ball from Mark Reid from his own half saw Frank McGarvey beat the offside trap to score confidently with a left foot shot.

In the second half Celtic carried on where they had left off and McGarvey showed great close control to dribble past Leighton and score from a tight angle after Leighton had lost the ball on the ground.

The huge travelling Celtic support continued to cheer their team's every move until the final whistle.
