Review

Celtic beat Aberdeen at Parkhead for the first time since March 1979 on a bitterly cold day with two of the best goals they were to score all season. This was one of the most entertaining matches seen at Celtic Park for many seasons.

Celtic attacked from the start with Provan and Sullivan going close. Aberdeen were a constant danger on the break with young teenagers David Moyes and Eric Black having a fine tussle against each other.

Celtic took the lead in 39 minutes with a glorious effort by Frank McGarvey. He played a one-two at the edge of the area with McCluskey and curled an inch perfect shot past Jim Leighton high into the top left hand corner of the net. It was an exquisite goal.

This game was notable for superb midfield displays from Gordon Strachan and Tommy Burns who both gave virtuoso performances. Celtic went two up when George McCluskey collected a loose ball on the left hand side and strode forward to blast a fine low shot into the net from 25 yards past the helpless Leighton.

Aberdeen pressed until the end and scored a consolation goal when Strachan fired home a free kick that had been deflected back to him by the Celtic wall.
